TSO Morari located in Changthang region of Ladakh at an altitude of 4,522 meters (14,836 ft)

A saltwater lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains and barren landscapes.

Part of the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve, home to rare migratory birds like the black-necked crane.


About Puga Valley 

Located in the Changthang region of eastern Ladakh at an altitude of around 13,500 ft (4,115 m).

Famous for geothermal hot springs, fumaroles, and mineral-rich steam vents.

Known as the “Land of Fire” because of naturally steaming hot springs and boiling mud pools.

  • From Leh: Approx. 220 km (7–8 hours) via Chumathang.


  • Route: Leh → Tanglang La → Chumathang → Tso Moriri.
  • From Hanle -Distance: ~120 km

Approx. Time: 4–5 hours (depending on road conditions)

Hanle → Ukdungle → Merak → Chumathang → Tso Moriri


Tso Moriri → Puga Valley

  • Distance: ~180–200 km
  • Approx. Time: 7–8 hours

  • June to September – Weather is clear, lake accessible, and birds are active.

Acclimatization is essential before heading towards TSO Morari which is situated at an altitude of 14,836 feet . It is advisable to spend at least 2 nights in Leh with proper medical guidance and intake of Diamox (acetazolamide), as prescribed by a physician. Consumption of alcohol is strongly discouraged at high altitudes, as it can lead to serious health issues.


SG Adventures recommends a 1-night stay at Tso Moriri for a comfortable journey. If you’re exploring by car or bike, we suggest keeping Tso Moriri and Puga towards the end of your trip before heading to Manali.
